Media Structures have long carried out projects for London’s major cultural centre, Somerset House, and have for a number of years erected a projection tower for the Film 4 Summer Screen event hosted in their famous courtyard. However, we were recently asked by the centre to take on a more exclusive project, with a task to transform the entrance of a standard marquee for a coveted private party and capture the imagination of the specially selected guests.
Somerset House is renowned for its cultural events and exhibitions, featuring regular arts displays, workshops and enriching activities. As one of the capital’s top places to be, the Media Structures team knew we had to come up with a highly creative, unique and visually impressive design project, that would ensure a memorable event for the 500 party guests. Media Structures helped turn the front of the marquee into the entrance of Noah’s Ark – a huge wooden structure shaped to excite all at the party and reflect the journey the event would take them on, and set the mood for what they were about to embark on.
Representing the famous image of the ark, our structure needed to be large enough yet still technically and structurally sound to ensure complete safety. Because the event was so exclusive, we also needed to erect the structure quickly and without being seen by the press. The team therefore had to be versatile under these challenging circumstances; we worked through the night behind tented screens to hide the structure until completion.
Supported with a steel frame a traditional boat structure was erected which was illuminated by the surrounding courtyard lights for a more dramatic effect. The finished project was completed on time and to a high quality standard to amaze guests at the Somerset House event. Although we will never know who the party was for, we are very pleased with the result!
